' Drawing was my escape from reality. Becoming an architectural designer allowed me to turn those imagined worlds into tangible spaces. – S. Brito' My journey began at four universities: two in Madrid and two in the UK. I wanted to master architecture, speak fluent English, and travel the world, turning sketches into real spaces. After graduating with strong grades, my first job was a 9-million-euro airport refurbishment in Madrid. Completing that project led me to bigger opportunities, including a role at one of London’s largest engineering firms, where I coordinated a major high-speed train project linking southern England to Scotland. Managing billions instead of millions was a big shift, but I successfully delivered the projects I led. Then COVID-19 changed my path. I joined a high-end commercial architecture studio, collaborating with developers, but quickly realized architecture was more about profit than artistry. To find clarity, I booked a one-way ticket to Australia. In Australia, I worked on one of the country’s largest commercial construction projects, coordinating contractors, architects, and clients. But visa restrictions soon pushed me into remote areas where I went from office architect to laborer, building structures with my own hands. At first, most builders didn’t trust a foreign architect, and I was often sidelined. One week, I was asked to jackhammer a 4-meter-high column, only to later discover that a circular symbol in the architect's drawing had been misinterpreted as a column. This mistake cost $20,000 AUD in materials, labor, and time—and it wasn’t the only one I saw. These experiences reshaped how I approach design & communication. Seeing firsthand the gaps between design and construction taught me lessons that textbooks and offices never could. Those lessons became the foundation of Arcaiastudio.
